march/april

(pop-ish)
1. portishead - the rip (official video) - this song is rekonkulously good. starts beautiful and ends insanely. i've had them on my pandora for like a week now.
2. janelle monae - sincerely, jane. (sadsteve link) - according to itunes i've listened to this song 58 times. and it refuses. to get old.
3. generationals - when they fight they fight (youtube link - no video) - new orleans rock + horns + female vocals. nuff said.
4. data - j'aime pas l'art (youtube link - no video) - old 80s band that sounds curiously like justice...
5. fang island - daisy (official video) - takes a minute to get into the video but its pretty, um, fawesome?
6. mika - rain (official video) - i kinda hate this song for being stuck in my head for like a week. i kinda love this song cos its mika. singing falsetto. with synth.
7. data - rapture (youtube link - no video) - same band from #4 but this time with vocals. sick.

(hip hop-ish)
1. k'naan feat. chubb rock - abcs (official video) - my greatest shazam success yet. the chorus is a kids-singin, hard-hittin, jump-up-and-down, hip-hoppin masterpiece. think damian marley meets mos def meets pink floyd we-don't-need-no-education style.
2. dan black feat. kid cudi - symphonies remix (official video) - new single from the lead singer of the servant (see: liquefy - sweet song). video; silly. original w/o kid cudi; decent. chorus; sweetly smooth strings with a hint of low horns and a drum beat that sounds like its stolen from a zion i song.
3. rhymefest and dj rtc - familiar faces (youtube link - no video) - sampling the donnie dark cover of mad world, clearly.
4.** the hood internet - i believe you should looka here (rich boy v simian mobile disco) (sadsteve link) - all the hood internet shit is sick, like, on a milkman level... you can download their newest mixtape here or go to their website and download all the mixtapes on the left side panel.
5. atmosphere - sunshine (youtube link - no video) - minneapolis band. i'll forgive 'em for this song describing the experience of curing a hangover with a good dose of playing outside.
6. k'naan - take a minute (youtube link - no video) - another song by the somali (via canada) poet/rapper/musician with a more somber tone; about the importance of generosity and helping others... don't let that scare you off though - the chorus is chock full of strings, and damn if he doesn't know how to use 'em.
7. dj earworm - united state of pop 2009 (official-ish video) - 2009's de.fin.i.tive mashup. includes all of the top 25 songs of 2009 from hot n cold @ #25 straight up to boom boom pow.

NOLA, baby.

Well, here I am. In New Orleans. Good thing I drove 678 miles so that I could sit. In a library. And study.*

But! New place to study means I need some new music to study to!

Here's the playlist I'll be studying to today. It's fairly eclectic, but I stayed away from hip-hop so that I wouldn't get locked into the beats while reading the same paragraph over and over again.

The xx is a group of 19 year olds I found the other day on Pitchfork, the (8.7!) review and entire album are here: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13400-xx/

I clearly can't stop listening to Thievery lately after the concert this summer, and radiohead, css and the knife seem to be staples i can't get away from.

Neko Case and Gillian Welch are not my usual type of music, but a friend in Kenosha turned me on to them and they're also playing constantly in my life...

Okay. Enough nerdiness. Apologies for the repeats, enjoy the music!

*Also I may or may not have spent the past 6 hours chronicling about 500 songs from my childhood.

...I really hope I don't go deaf.
